The schooner PORTLAND encountered several disasters in Lake Huron. It ran aground and became a total loss near Presque Isle during a heavy gale in October 1877. Attempts were made to salvage the vessel, but they were unsuccessful, and it was eventually abandoned as a total loss. The wrecking tug PRINDEVILLE and lighter D. PROVOST also went ashore during the same gale, with the tug likely becoming a total loss. The schooner NELLIE GARDNER later salvaged the anchor and chain from the wreck of the PORTLAND. The vessel was built in 1856 and had a gross tonnage of 345.29.
