The schooner NEWELL A. EDDY was lost in a gale on Lake Michigan on April 20, 1893. It had a cargo of 81,000 bushels of wheat on board and is presumed to have gone down in Hammond Bay, Lake Michigan. The steamer CHARLES EDDY, which was towing the schooner, had a broken steering gear and was unable to help when the schooner broke loose.
The stern of the NEWELL A. EDDY, with the name distinctly painted on it, was found ashore just west of Bois Blanc lights. The entire crew of the schooner, seven people, were lost in the incident. The schooner struck Spectacle Reef during the storm and was knocked to pieces.
The NEWELL A. EDDY was owned by the Eddy Transportation Company and had a capacity of 2,200 gross tons. It was valued at $70,000. The schooner was built on May 6, 1890, and had a length of 242 feet, a beam of 39.7 feet, and a depth of 16 feet.
