The Steam Yacht ELVA, formerly known as the Steam Yacht GLAD TIDINGS, was a vessel with a long history of service. It was built in 1889 at Chicago, Illinois. Originally, it had a gross tonnage of 81.33 tons and a net tonnage of 61.77 tons. Over the years, there were some changes in its configuration and ownership.
In 1894, the vessel was registered under the name GLAD TIDINGS and had the same specifications. However, by 1896, it was renamed ELVA but retained the same registration number (U.S. No. 86059). At this time, the vessel’s gross tonnage increased to 85 tons, with a net tonnage of 50 tons. It operated as a passenger service vessel and had a crew of eight members.
In 1914, the ELVA still retained its U.S. No. 86059 registration number and was recorded with a gross tonnage of 85 tons and a net tonnage of 50 tons. The home port had changed to Marquette, Michigan.
Throughout its service life, the Steam Yacht ELVA (formerly known as GLAD TIDINGS) served various purposes, from a yacht to a passenger service vessel. Its dimensions remained relatively consistent, with a length of around 70.6 to 90.5 feet, a breadth of approximately 18.1 to 18.5 feet, and a depth of 9.0 to 9.2 feet.
