The steambarge MARY JARECKI encountered difficulties on Point Sauble, Lake Superior, in July 1883. The vessel was abandoned as it was raised amidships and likely broken, with the boiler shifting and water being difficult to lower. The crew was at Sault Ste. Marie while efforts were made to save whatever was possible. The vessel’s machinery was recovered by S.A. Murphy, but only the outfit of the MARY JARECKI was salvaged. The vessel was lost in Lake Superior and had a tonnage of 502 tons. It was 12 years old at the time of the loss and valued at $28,000.
