CALEDONIA
The steamer GALE STAPLES, previously known as the CALEDONIA, ran aground at Pt. Au Sable in Lake Superior on Monday, September 30. It was en route to Hancock, Michigan, carrying a cargo of coal. Due to severe leakage, the crew had to evacuate the vessel as it was being heavily pounded by the waves, and water was washing over its decks.
After the incident, the underwriters decided to declare the GALE STAPLES as a constructive total loss, leading to its subsequent abandonment. The steamer was owned by the Massey Steamship Co. based in Superior, Wisconsin.
