The schooner ELMA, with U.S. registration number 8895, had a gross tonnage of 400.68 tons and a net tonnage of 380.65 tons. It was built in Marine City, Michigan, in the year 1873, and its home port was Buffalo, New York. The vessel’s dimensions were 165.2 feet in length, 30.0 feet in beam, and 11.0 feet in depth.
On October 1, 1895, during a severe storm on Lake Superior, the ELMA foundered in Munising Bay. The crew of eight managed to reach a ledge on the Pictured Rocks, except for one sailor who was washed away before the vessel was abandoned. The crew survived the ordeal and was rescued by lighthouse keepers.
