History
The ADVENTURER was a tugboat (towboat) built in 1895 in Two Harbors, Minnesota. It was constructed using wood as the primary hull material. The original owner of the ADVENTURER was Alexander Strand, based in Two Harbors, Minnesota.
Powered by a screw propulsion system, the ADVENTURER had a high-pressure engine with a single cylinder. The engine, manufactured by Phoenix Iron Works in Port Huron, had dimensions of 16 x 18 inches and generated 125 horsepower at 120 rpm. The tugboat was equipped with a single boiler with a firebox size of 5’4″ x 12′ and a pressure rating of 100 pounds.
The hull dimensions of the ADVENTURER were approximately 51.42 feet in length, 11.16 feet in beam (width), and 6.25 feet in depth. It had a gross tonnage of 16.32.
Tragically, on December 16, 1906, the ADVENTURER was wrecked near the Ontonagon Lighthouse in Ontonagon, Michigan, on Lake Superior. It had broken away from the tug TRAMP while being towed and drifted ashore. No cargo was onboard at the time of the incident. The ADVENTURER was subsequently abandoned and dismantled.
The vessel had a U.S. registry and an official number of 107174. It was classified as a tug and had a net tonnage of 8.00.
The ADVENTURER had a brief history, serving as a towboat until its unfortunate wreck in 1906. No lives were lost during the incident.
