The steamship GOV. SMITH was a wooden package freighter built on August 24, 1889. It had an official U.S. number of 86066, a gross tonnage of 2044 tons, and a net tonnage of 1547 tons. The vessel measured 240 feet in length, 42 feet in width, and 23.4 feet in height.
On August 19, 1906, the GOV. SMITH sank in a collision with the steamship URANUS, which occurred about eight miles off Pointe Aux Barques in Lake Huron. Fortunately, all 20 persons on board the GOV. SMITH were able to escape, and there were no casualties in the collision. The collision was believed to have been caused by smoke on the lake.
