The ALBEMARLE was a three-masted schooner that was built in 1867 by C. Bidwell in Buffalo, New York. It had an official number of 1730 and was made of wood. The schooner measured 154 feet in length and had a gross tonnage of 413 tons.
On November 6, 1867, the ALBEMARLE was stranded and wrecked in Point Nipigon, Straits of Mackinac, Lake Huron, during a storm. It was carrying a cargo of iron ore and was bound from Escanaba to Cleveland. Initially, a tug was sent to rescue the vessel, but it was found to be in a hopeless condition. Wreckers continued to work on the ALBEMARLE until it was finally abandoned in August of the following year.
The vessel was owned by Winslow Bros. of Buffalo. Despite efforts to raise and salvage the ALBEMARLE, it was ultimately considered a total loss.
