The schooner HUNTER SAVIDGE was a wooden vessel built in 1879 at Grand Haven, Michigan. It had a gross tonnage of 152 tons and net tonnage of 144 tons. The ship was owned by John Mullerweiss of Alpena, Michigan.
On August 20, 1899, the HUNTER SAVIDGE capsized in a squall off Pointe aux Barques in Lake Huron, resulting in the loss of five lives. The vessel was bound from Sarnia to Alpena at the time of the accident.
The shipwreck remained a hazard for some time, with wreckage occasionally being found in the vicinity of Port Austin. The approximate value of the loss was reported to be $3,000.
It is worth noting that this information is from historical records, and the wreck of the HUNTER SAVIDGE remains a part of maritime history in the Great Lakes region.
