The schooner CONSUELO, with a tonnage of 195 tons, sank off Marblehead in Lake Huron on May 1875 during a gale. The vessel was loaded with building stone from Vermilion and bound for Cleveland. Unfortunately, four crew members lost their lives, while two others were saved. The names of the deceased crew members were H.M. Hauser (Captain), Wm. Clary, Wm. Low, and Chas. Peterson (seamen), along with an unnamed woman cook.
The tug DOWLING of Cleveland later found the body of Captain Hauser floating in the water about two months after the sinking. The body was identified by personal items and clothing, though it had suffered damage due to exposure to the elements.
The CONSUELO was an old schooner, built in 1851 by R. Calkins in Cleveland. It underwent repairs and rebuilding in 1861 and was considered a seaworthy craft despite its age. The vessel was valued at $3,500 in 1851 and had a net tonnage of 195 tons.
The ship’s cargo was eventually salvaged, and in 1887, the CONSUELO met its final fate when it was wrecked at Port Hope, Lake Huron.
