The steamer PERSIAN was launched on July 18, 1874, in Cleveland as the largest bulk freighter to date, specifically built for Lake Superior trade. On its maiden trip in August 1874, it carried the largest cargo out of Marquette, consisting of 1,316 gross tons of iron ore bound for Cleveland. In November 1874, the PERSIAN transported the largest cargo of wheat to Buffalo, carrying 63,194 bushels.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck the PERSIAN in August 1875. On August 26, a fire broke out on the vessel around 9:30 PM. The fire started near the coal bunkers and rapidly spread, eventually engulfing the entire ship. Despite attempts to fight the fire and save the vessel, including using pumps and hoses, it became evident that the PERSIAN could not be salvaged. The crew and passengers had to abandon the ship and were rescued by the schooner MONTANA and the tug MERRICK.
Afterward, the propeller EMPIRE STATE arrived and attempted to extinguish the fire and tow the PERSIAN to safety, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The PERSIAN burned and settled rapidly, eventually sinking in about 30 fathoms of water, approximately 8 miles from the Point. The hull of the PERSIAN was not insured, and it remained uncertain whether it would be salvaged or not.
There were discussions about possibly raising the boilers and engine of the PERSIAN, but it is unclear whether this plan was eventually carried out.
