The wreck of the J.J. CARROLL, identified by its registration number 224735, is located approximately 100 feet from the shore, aligned with the tree line on the east side of Fish Point. The vessel was destroyed by a fire that burned it down to the waterline, leaving only a small section of the transom visible on the hull. It is possible that more of the hull remains buried in the sandy bottom. Among the wreckage, there is a barrel-like object, likely a part of the boiler, which is closed at one end. Adjacent to it, there is a circular object measuring about 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height. The site is scattered with pipes and various metal parts. Due to the impact of winter ice and salvage operations, the area is mainly a debris field running in a north-south direction. Visibility at the site is expected to range from 8 to 10 feet, and during late summer, the shallow waters may be heavily covered in marine vegetation.
According to the Merchant Vessel List from 1930, the J.J. CARROLL was an oil screw vessel with a gross tonnage of 77 tons. It was built in 1925 and was reported as lost on November 7, 1929, due to a fire that occurred at Pelee Island, Ontario. Fortunately, there were no casualties in the incident.
Information from the Merchant Vessel List of 1928 reveals that the J.J. CARROLL had a gross tonnage of 77 tons and a net tonnage of 68 tons. It was constructed in Sandusky, Ohio, in 1925 and operated from the same port. With dimensions of 59.3 feet in length, 15.6 feet in width, and a draft of 5.5 feet, the vessel primarily served in freight transportation. The crew consisted of two members, and it had an indicated horsepower of 100. The J.J. CARROLL was owned by the United Fisheries Co.
