On the same day, the steamer W.C. Richardson ran aground on the rocks about three miles outside Buffalo, New York. Samuel Mayberry, the chief engineer, and four engine room crew members drowned, with their bodies yet to be recovered. Fourteen other crew members were rescued and brought into the local harbor. The Richardson, owned by the Richardson Transportation Company of Cleveland and commanded by Captain William Burke, was carrying a valuable cargo of 200,000 bushels of flaxseed from Duluth to Buffalo. The ship’s value was estimated at $200,000, and the cargo was valued at $370,000.
