ALICE VIVIAN U30240

History

The ALICE VIVIAN was an unpowered dredge barge that was built in 1898 in Islip, New York. It did not have any other known names and was registered under the official number 30240. The barge had a gross tonnage of 710 tons and a net tonnage of 710 tons. John Carlson brought the barge through Erie Canal to Great Lakes for Zenith Dredge Co., Duluth, MN

On an unspecified date in 1975, the Alice Vivian was lost due to a fire, which was determined to be the result of arson. The incident took place at Connie’s Landing on the St. Louis River in Duluth, which is located in Lake Superior. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities associated with the loss.

Prior to the loss, the Alice Vivian had been laid up at Connie’s Landing since 1947, remaining abandoned for more than 20 years. Vandals set the barge ablaze, resulting in a fire that consumed the vessel. It burned down to the waterline and subsequently sank.

The Alice Vivian had been brought to the Great Lakes region before 1911 and was primarily used for dredging operations to clear spilled coal and ore from Duluth Harbor. However, further details about its history, owners, and other notable information are not provided in the available information.
